Chapter Volunteer Project

TO: CCC of TCCMMN and advisor Linda Radimecky
FR: Chase Davies

The following information is from a conversation with Linda Radimecky, Ft. Snelling State Park, (612 725 2389) on 11/202009

I related some of the happenings of the 11/18 CCC meeting at Ilene Coons’ home including the reasons for and design of the January Members Meeting wherein Committees will be initiated.

Since this is in May, it leaves the July regular meeting time when we want to be outdoors, and August and October (interim months between member meetings) available for field trip(s) and Education/Workshop programming. As I recall, the CCC seemed to think the September Members Meeting should be a normal meeting, not an alternative outdoor activity.

I then moved to the reason for my call to her, to ascertain the date and needs for the Chapter Volunteer Project that she has mentioned to be tops on her short list.

Date: May 1, Saturday
What: GREEN TOUCH DAY - an annual event wherein employees of various energy companies come to work removing certain exotic plants from Fort Snelling State Park.
Who: about 100 people come each year to help with this project
Time for energy workers: 9 am to before 3 pm
Time for TCCMMN leaders: a bit before 9 am to be ready for the energy employees to about 3 pm which would be after final cleanup.

TCCMMN members

  1. Would go with a group to a specific area where they would help identify plants that the target are to be removed.
  2. Should plan to bring their lunch with them.
  3. Could research the species to help put into perspective the reasons why these aliens are here, how they affect the habitat, etc. (NOTE: use the Latin species name for web research to better assure accuracy).

Target species for May 1, 2010 are:

  • garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata)
  • narrow-leaved bitter-cress (Cardamine impatiens)
  • buckthorns: European buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica); Glossy buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula)
  • Japanese hedge parsley (Torilis japonica)
